Catherine Loweree Williams

As a traveler, adventurer, and lover of open skies, I find profound inspiration in our natural world. My work preserves the memories of my time spent in picturesque places, allowing me to relive these moments in time while sharing them with those who see my work. I often gather natural materials from the places I visit or collect them from sustainable vendors. Folding branches, bones, and antlers into my pieces roots my work in the earth and the natural environment that inspires me. 

I have been painting and drawing since my early childhood and have always had a deep fascination with color and color theory. This foundation has led to a painterly quality in my weavings, and I often focus on the emotional power of color when creating a new piece. 

Being an art teacher has directly impacted my process. My students create with abandon and consistently remind me that, first and foremost, art-making should be fun. It is also an important part of my teaching philosophy to show students that art-making can be accessible to all and does not have to be limited by expensive materials. I embody this in my own work by using found and recycled materials as often as possible, and always focusing on the joy of the process.


Biography

Catherine Loweree Williams grew up in the border city of El Paso, TX, before moving to New Mexico in 2008.  Her Mexican-American upbringing helped instill a strong sense of community and personal history that continue to shape her to this day. 

Catherine has a BA and MA in Art Education from the University of New Mexico. It was during her Master’s program that she fell in love with weaving and yarn, and since then her artistic focus has been on fiber arts. She never could have guessed that her habit of constantly tying knots as a child would have prepared her to be a weaver. 

Catherine has been an art teacher in New Mexico public schools for 13 years. She has presented on the impact of art in the classroom at the National AVID Educators Conference, and has taught weaving workshops and classes to both children and adults. She currently sells her work locally in Albuquerque, NM at Fillin’ Funky Refillery and Page 1 Books. 

Catherine lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her husband and two dogs, and when she’s not weaving she spends her time travelling, exploring Albuquerque, and reading as much as she can.
